The business landscape is increasingly competitive. An accounting master’s degree can help you stand out from the crowd, advance your career, and increase your earning potential.
Have a background in business but not specifically accounting? The University of Georgia designed the Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAcc) program with you in mind. You can earn a master’s degree in accounting online while working full-time.
Our MPAcc program can be a game-changing opportunity for your professional life. But is an accounting master’s degree actually worth it? Discover the benefits of our Master of Professional Accountancy program and explore how it can shape your future.
How is the MPAcc Different from Other Accounting Master’s Programs?
UGA’s Master of Professional Accountancy program is unique. We developed it for non-accounting majors with two years of relevant work experience. The program bridges the gap between students’ current expertise and specialized knowledge in accounting, opening doors to promotions, career shifts, and potentially significant salary increases.
Four Benefits of a Master of Professional Accountancy Degree
1. Career Advancement
Unlike some other master’s degree programs designed for those specifically with an accounting background, UGA’s MPAcc program works from the ground up, helping career changers establish a strong foundation in accounting fundamentals. We also go beyond the basics, examining financial accounting, managerial accounting, taxation, and accounting systems in depth.
With this knowledge and insight, our graduates can take on complex financial projects, lead teams, and contribute to strategic decision-making processes within their organizations. The MPAcc qualifies individuals for upper-level accounting and finance positions, which often require or strongly prefer candidates with a master’s degree.
These jobs include, for example:
- Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
- Controller
- Director of Finance
- Senior Financial Analyst
2. Networking Opportunities
More than friends and colleagues, a professional network adds immense value to the lives of accountants, auditors, and consultants. In fact, it can’t be overstated — experts suggest that between 70% and 80% of jobs exist in the “hidden job market” accessed via robust professional connections. Moreover, LinkedIn reported that 85% of people obtain their positions through networking.
But networking isn’t just about landing the job; it’s about positioning oneself for a lasting career in the industry. Through networking, professionals in the accounting field can effectively navigate their path, find support when they need it, and develop mentoring relationships that grow their confidence.
At UGA, we have a strong alumni network. Our J.M. Tull School of Accounting graduates go on to work for leading organizations, including Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, PwC, EY, KPMG and more. They are employed in a range of industries, including banking, finance, government, academia, and beyond.

3. Increased Earning Potential
Often, the outcome of career advancement is increased earnings, whether through raises or other compensation packages. This tangible result of students’ hard work could mean an immediate salary increase of 10% or more, depending on the role and industry.
A master’s degree commands a higher salary—it may accompany a promotion within one’s current company or a complete career shift. Over the course of an individual’s working life, the cumulative impact of a larger salary facilitated by a master’s degree is substantial — about $400,000 more in median lifetime earnings than bachelor’s degree holders.
4. Online Classes for Working Professionals
Online accounting master’s degree courses allow students to balance their studies with work commitments and personal responsibilities. The ability to access course materials and lectures at any time enables students to integrate their studies into their busy schedules.
This means that students can increase their earning potential, expand their job prospects, and develop advanced skills, all without the need to interrupt their current career trajectory.
