The 2016 Outstanding Faculty Award winners

Five Terry professors received 2016 Outstanding Faculty Awards for their contributions to the college’s teaching, research and service missions.

Nicholas Berente, associate professor of management information systems, was presented the Research Excellence Award. The award is given to tenure-track faculty for superior research published in the past five years.

Berente is a prolific researcher whose interests include digital innovation and entrepreneurship, cyberinfrastructure, and institutional change. He is the principal investigator for multiple projects funded by the National Science Foundation and serves as an associate editor for the journals Information Systems Research and Information and Organization. His research appears in those journals, as well as Organization Science, MIS Quarterly, the Data Science Journal and Research Policy.

Ralph Steuer, who holds the Charles S. Sanford Sr. Chair in Business, received the Distinguished Research Award. The award recognizes ongoing research excellence that displays a history of longevity and impact within its field. Tenured faculty who are full professors by academic rank are eligible for the award.

Steuer has written a key book and over 100 research articles. His seminal research has centered on multiple-criteria decision-making, multi-attribute portfolio selection, multiple-objective programming, and efficient sets and surface. He has served as editor of the International Journal of Portfolio Analysis and Management and has received the Gold Medal Award from the International Society on Multiple Criteria Decision Making, as well as the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.

John Hulland, a professor of marketing who holds the Tanner Chair in Sales Management, is the recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award for exemplary work in the classroom.

Hulland joined the Terry College in 2011, and quickly established a reputation for dedication to his students. His teaching has been highly praised by entry-level undergraduates and doctoral students alike. Hulland regularly teaches courses in marketing strategy and applied multivariate statistics, as well as a First-Year Odyssey Seminar on brand management. He also serves as the graduate coordinator for the department’s Ph.D. program.

Craig Piercy, director of the Online Master of Internet Technology Program and a senior lecturer in management information systems, received the Instructional Excellence Award.

Piercy joined the MIS Department in 2000 and in 2014 became the first Terry faculty member to earn a teaching certificate from the Online Learning Consortium. In addition to receiving consistently high student evaluations for his innovative teaching methods, Piercy has supported the Women in Technology program, served as a KPMG Case Judge, and worked closely with numerous students enrolled in independent, directed studies.

Charlotte Mason, head of the Marketing Department and Terry Chair of Business Administration, is the recipient of the Faculty Service Award.

Since joining Terry in 2008, she has played the leading role in recruiting new faculty to the department, which has seen a marked increase in research productivity and student satisfaction. She also directs the Master of Marketing Research program, which has maintained a 100 percent placement record under her leadership. In addition, Mason has served on numerous committees within the college and university and stays engaged professionally as a reviewer for many academic journals, conferences and competitions.
