Facts about the MIS Department
We have an exceptionally attractive campus, and a new classroom building with all the amenities that create a superior teaching environment. Faculty
- Three of our faculty have been ranked among the top
25 most productive researchers in MIS. (Bostrom, H. Watson, R. Watson).
- We have three chaired professors (Bostrom, H. Watson, R. Watson)
- The MIS Department was ranked among the top ten programs in the world by the Financial Times and sixth in the US in research productivity by an Academy of Management article earlier this year. It was one of only four departments included in the top ten in both rankings.
- It was also ranked in the top 20 in the United States this year by USWR.
- We have 12 professors.
Research Program
- Our research program has consistently been ranked among the top ten in the U.S. for more than a decade.
- Several of our faculty have won research grants (Aronson, Bostrom, Brohman, Goodhue, R. Watson).
- Several of our faculty have won awards for outstanding research (Bostrom, H. Watson, R. Watson).
- Our research is often interdisciplinary, with joint projects with accounting, marketing, education, engineering, artificial intelligence, computer science, and child and family development.

Undergraduate Program
- Our undergraduate MIS program has been ranked in the top 10 in U.S. by ComputerWorld.
- We have 500 Undergraduate MIS majors (average SAT over 1200).
- More than 95% of our undergrads are on full scholarship.
- We have an active Industry Advisory Board. Representatives from more than 20 companies (e.g., Andersen Consulting, Comshare, Conoco, Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, Holiday Inn, Home Depot, IBM, NationsBank, SunTrust, and UPS) provide advice on our undergraduate program and contribute funds for student scholarships.
- Several of our faculty have received teaching-related grants (Lewis, McKeown, R. Watson).
- Several of our faculty have won awards for outstanding teaching (Bostrom, H. Watson, R. Watson).
- Our undergraduate major has six required classes (visual basic programming, database, systems analysis & design, decision
support systems, telecommunications & networking, and information resource management) plus one elective (e.g., Web development, ERP, etc.).
MBA Program
- We have 40 MBAs with a concentration in MIS (average GMAT of 630).
- Our MBA program is ranked in the top 50 by BusinessWeek.
- Our MBA program is ranked in the top 25 Techno-MBA programs by BusinessWeek.
- We have four MIS concentrations: Electronic Commerce, MIS Professional, Internet Technologies and Decision Support Systems
- Courses include: RAD, database, decision support systems, telecommunications & networking, information resource management, expert systems, electronic commerce, data warehousing, groupware, globalization and IT, and groupware.
- We have a custom-designed on-campus/off-campus MBA program for a leading global management consulting firm
(PricewaterhouseCoopers).
- Several of our faculty have won awards for outstanding teaching (Bostrom, H. Watson, R. Watson). Some have won multiple UGA teaching awards (Brohman).
Ph.D. Program
- We have 10 Ph.D. students.
- Several of our Ph.D. students have won awards for teaching and for research.
- We have a strong tradition of collaborative research in our Ph.D. program. Most faculty work jointly with individual students and groups of students on research papers (and, of course with other faculty members!).
- Most Ph.D. students graduate with several conference and journal publications.
Service Activities
- Several of our faculty have won awards for professional service (McKeown, H. Watson).
- Most of our faculty serve or have served as journal editors, associate editors, or members of editorial boards for journals such as MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Decision Sciences, DataBase, Journal of Data Warehousing, and Journal of Management.
- Many of our faculty serve or have served as Program Chairs or Track Chairs for leading conferences such as ICIS, AIS, and HICSS.
- Most of our faculty have written leading textbooks (e.g., decision support systems, telecommunications & networking, database, proramming, MIS introduction, executive information systems, data warehousing) for a total of more than 70 books.
- Most of our faculty are actively involved in consulting and applied research with leading organizations, such as the United
Nations, the World Bank, the U.S. Department of Defense, Deloitte and Touche, IBM, Glaxo, Lockheed, Whirlpool, USAA, NationWide, and a U.S. television network.
