Hammersley appointed to Heckman Chair of Public Accounting

Jacqueline Hammersley has been named to the Harold M. Heckman Chair of Public Accounting at the Terry College of Business. The appointment was recently approved by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.

Hammersley is an expert authority on advanced auditing techniques and audit judgment and has spent two decades teaching and studying auditing practices.

“Jackie Hammersley has established an exceptional reputation among academics in the auditing field. Most notably, she served for three years as an editor of the most celebrated research journal in the accounting discipline,” said Benjamin C. Ayers, dean of the Terry College of Business. “She is a key member of the outstanding J.M. Tull School of Accounting faculty and highly deserving of this recognition.”

Hammersley’s current research focuses on the factors that affect auditor performance when auditing complex estimates. She has won several research awards over the years, including the American Accounting Association’s Deloitte/Wildman Medal and the Competitive Manuscript Award in 2004, following her dissertation. She has received several grants from the Center for Audit Quality to support her research.

As a faculty member, she contributes to accounting research in several important ways, serving in a number of key editorial posts over the years and mentoring and advising doctoral students. She served as editor of The Accounting Review from 2017-2020. She currently serves as deputy senior editor for Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, and she is on the editorial boards of Accounting, Organizations and Society, Behavioral Research in Accounting and Managerial Auditing Journal.

In addition to her research, Hammersley is an award-winning instructor who teaches at the master’s and doctoral levels. She came to the University of Georgia in 2003 after earning her doctorate from the University of Illinois. She also received an a Master of Accounting Science from the University of Illinois and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Alumni and friends of the J.M. Tull School of Accounting endowed the Heckman Chair of Public Accounting in 1977 to honor Harold M. Heckman. Heckman served as a professor of accounting at UGA from 1921 to 1966.

Hammersley succeeds accounting professor emeritus Michael Bamber as the Heckman chairholder.
