Student-Managed Investment Fund
What is SMIF?

Terry SMIF is a premier opportunity that the finance department offers for students interested in investments. You will immerse yourself into the financial markets and gain valuable practical experience. You will also earn 1.5 hours credit per semester (three hours over the two semesters).
If interested, you can attend one or more of our meetings. SMIF class holds regular sessions each Wednesday from 3:30 – 5:00 pm in 109 Sanford Hall.
Team Oriented: SMIF is divided into industry sector teams to help with your development and provide networking with the top students in finance.
Leadership: A second year in the program is available for those who excel their first year and are willing to take on a leadership position in the organization.
Career Networking: Prior SMIF students have had success in acquiring both summer internships and full-time jobs in prestigious financial firms, such as: Bank of America, Barclays, Boston Consulting Group, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Roark Capital, SunTrust Robinson Humphrey.
Application Process: Terry College Finance majors with a strong interest in industry research, stock picking, asset management and firm valuation are encouraged to apply. The application process for Fall 2013 is currently open for rising juniors and seniors. The application can be downloaded in either DOC (3.47 MB) or PDF (23 KB) format and submitted to Joanne Waldron, Finance department, Brooks 4th floor.
Fall 2012/Spring 2013 Class
Participation in SMIF club and class is available only to select students. Application process takes place in March and April of each year. We have completed our selection process for this Academic Year and Semester, and here is our current SMIF class of 2012/13 (PDF | 12.6 KB).
Contact the student president, Zac Carson or faculty advisor, Matt Blasko if you have any questions. You may also stop by the main finance department (Brooks 461) and talk to Joanne Waldron about any application process related questions.
Class will meet on Wednesdays 3:30 – 5pm during the Spring 2013 semester. Recommended readings include (a) The Handbook of Equity Market Anomalies, by Leonard Zacks; (b) The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing, by Pat Dorsey; as well as the same textbook as used in our FINA 4310 Investments course. Students will receive 1.5 credit hours per semester. This means that student participation is a one-year commitment, where two semesters of the class will earn three credit hours to help towards graduation.
The new SMIF class will include about 10 students who have already participated in 2011–12. These second-year SMIF students will fill most of the leadership positions for the fund management next year. Given the structure of the SMIF program, we expect to select about 10 new/rising juniors and 10 new seniors to join the program.
Our Terry SMIF is operating with real money, through donations of more than $200,000 directed to the fund. We operate under the umbrella of the UGA Foundation. The time commitment to the class and the fund management is likely to exceed the amount of time that you might normally expect for a 1.5 credit hour class. There may be some additional commitments outside of normal class time. If you are selected and sign up for the class, you need to be aware of these additional commitments. Along with the formal class, the SMIF is also a student club and there are outside activities that students are expected to make every effort to support (such as company visits, SMIF presentations to outside groups, etc).
Mission Statement
The mission of the Terry SMIF program encompasses three primary goals:
- To enhance the education of finance students through hands-on experience in security evaluation, portfolio management, and group leadership;
- To grow its investment portfolio as a long-term endowment asset of the Terry College; and
- To develop networking ties with the investment industry and promote the Terry College.
