Finance students from as far away as the University of Connecticut and the University of Notre Dame converged at the Terry College of Business for the eighth annual Stock Pitch Competition on Feb. 25.

Organized by Terry’s Student Managed Investment Fund, the competition has become a tradition, said SMIF President Elsa Evans, a senior studying finance.

“We are just so glad to be able to host the competition in person,” Evans said. “We had more applicants this year than we’ve ever had. I think that speaks to the reputation and the value of this contest.”

The contest is a chance for finance majors from across the country to network and get to know each other, she said.

“It was also a blast being back in person and getting to meet so many inspirational and talented finance students from across the country,” said Sam Lombino, a senior finance student representing the University of Connecticut at the contest. “I personally was impressed by how well the event was run and the quality of industry professionals you brought in to speak and judge at the event.”

Teams from each school make researched pitches for stocks they believe will be good buys in the future.

This year’s winning team, from the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business, pitched video streaming software platform Roku, which it argued was poised for growth in developing markets.

A volunteer team of portfolio managers and analysts awarded their team $3,000.

The second-place team from the University of Virginia won $1,500 for pitching StoneCo, a Brazilian financial services company, and the third-place team representing Indiana University took home $500 for pitching snack food giant Mondelez International.

This year’s contest was sponsored by Angel Oak Capital Advisors, BlackRock, LCG Associates, Stonehill Capital Management and Balentine.
