Hoyt elected Vice President of Academic Affairs of International Insurance Society

Robert E. Hoyt, head of the insurance, legal studies and real estate department at the Terry College of Business, was elected vice president of academic affairs of the International Insurance Society at its annual meeting in Seoul, South Korea.

In his new role, Hoyt, who also serves as the Dudley L. Moore Chair of Insurance at Terry, will oversee the society’s outreach and interaction with insurance scholars across the globe.

“I’m proud to see that Dr. Hoyt’s history of high-quality work has once again been recognized by the scholarly community,” said Charles Knapp, interim dean of the Terry College. “This honor is well-deserved.”

The IIS is the world’s largest global insurance industry organization, with almost 900 members representing global insurance leaders, international regulatory authorities and worldwide insurance scholars from more than 90 countries.

“My goal in this role will be to expand the involvement of insurance academics in the activities of IIS,” Hoyt said. “Our first initiative will be to highlight the key findings of recently published or emerging research that would be of interest to IIS members and others. In this way IIS can become a significant clearinghouse for research that addresses many of the issues facing the global insurance and risk management industry.”

A faculty member since 1988, Hoyt received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska and his master’s and PhD from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is no stranger to leadership, having served as interim dean of the Terry College in 2007.

Hoyt teaches corporate risk management and enterprise risk management and is a past recipient of the Richard B. Russell Undergraduate Teaching Award and a two-time winner of the Terry College Outstanding Teaching Award. His research interests include insurer solvency and insurance fraud, insurance economics, corporate hedging and securitization, and enterprise risk management.

He was appointed to the UGA Teaching Academy in 2001 and on two separate occasions has received the Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award from the American Risk and Insurance Association, of which he is past president. He also was honored by ARIA in 2007 with its Excellence in Teaching Award.

In 2009, Hoyt received the Walter H. Buce Memorial Award by the Atlanta chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society.
