John Campbell, the Herbert E. Miller Chair in Financial Accounting and head of the Terry College of Business Department of Finance, is one of 13 new members on the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council (FASAC).

The Financial Accounting Foundation Board of Trustees announced the appointments in December, and Campbell’s term of service begins Jan. 1, 2026.

The FASAC advises the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) on strategic and technical issues, project priorities and other matters that affect standard-setting. FASAC provides the board with diverse perspectives from individuals with varied business and professional backgrounds.

“The new FASAC members were chosen from a strong slate of candidates for their diverse experience and demonstrated commitment to supporting the FASB’s standard-setting mission,” said Edward C. Bernard, chair of the FAF Board of Trustees. “We are pleased to welcome them to their new roles and look forward to the perspectives they will bring to group discussions next year.”

The is the second advisory group to the FASB to which Campbell has been appointed. He continues to serve on the Academic Resource Group (ARG), a group that exclusively consists of professors and is designed to inform the FASB about relevant academic research findings.

Since 2010, Campbell has taught financial accounting to undergraduates, master’s, and doctoral students at the University of Georgia. Campbell was named head of the Department of Finance in the summer of 2023.

Campbell’s research lies at the intersection of accounting and finance. His papers examine capital market consequences of accounting and tax information and generally have implications for financial market regulations. He serves as an editor at the Review of Accounting Studies and on the editorial board of The Accounting ReviewContemporary Accounting Research, the Journal of Financial Reporting, and the Journal of Business, Finance, and Accounting. According to 2024 research rankings released by Brigham Young University (BYU), Campbell ranks #1 in the US in financial archival research productivity over the last six years.

He earned his PhD in management from the University of Arizona and a master’s in accountancy and bachelor’s degree in analytical finance from Wake Forest University.

Established in 1972, the Financial Accounting Foundation is the independent, private-sector, nonprofit organization responsible for the oversight, administration, financing, and appointment of the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. The FASB and GASB establish and improve financial accounting and reporting standards — known as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, or GAAP — for public and private companies, nonprofit organizations, and state and local governments in the United States.
