During a distinguished academic career, Dr. Harold A. Black inspired thousands of students to study and understand financial institutions and the monetary system they support. On Feb. 9, Black returns to the place where his higher education journey began to inspire students and faculty at the Terry College of Business.

Black, a professor emeritus at the University of Tennessee, will deliver a virtual talk as part of the Terry Leadership Speaker Series at 9:30 a.m.

Black was the fourth African American student admitted to the University of Georgia and the first African American student to enter the Terry College of Business. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1966 and went on to earn master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from the Ohio State University.

During his career he taught at the University of Florida, the University of North Carolina, Howard University and American University, culminating at the University of Tennessee. His research focused on the relationship between banks and their customers, how race impacted these relationships and the outcomes those relationships helped foster.

Black is one of four Terry alumni being honored as Terry Trailblazers for 2021, graduates who have achieved career success while making a meaningful impact on their organizations and communities. An online roundtable of the 2021 Terry Trailblazers inductees will be held 12:15-1:30 p.m. on Feb. 9.

This year’s class of Terry Trailblazers also includes:

  • Angela Tolliver (BBA ’92, MBA ’14), engineering data governance leader for Cox Communications, has held many technology leadership positions with Cox Communications and overseen large technology rollouts for Cox and its affiliates. In 2020, Tolliver was a finalist for Advocate of the Year by Women in IT, where she was recognized for going beyond the call of duty to pioneer women in IT initiatives.

Azih has served as an auditor for banks, insurance companies and brokerage firms.
