Students who earn a degree from the Terry College of Business already have the academic preparation and work ethic that sets them up for success in the workplace, but this summer they honed their Terry Edge with a new series on soft skills.

More than 100 students used this summer to improve their professional networking and career readiness through an online workshop Office of Undergraduate Student Services and Office of Alumni Relations.

The six-part career seminar series tackled topics ranging from interview strategies to virtual networking and personal finances. Students who completed at least four of the six sessions earned a Terry Summer Series credential to add to their résumés.

The goal was to help students write a new chapter in their COVID-19 stories and work with Terry alumni in the process, said Sharen Phinney, director of Undergraduate Student Services.

Terry’s Alumni Relations team tapped the college’s professional development mentors and alumni network to lead students through weekly online seminars that ran through June and July.

Providing virtual summer programming was uncharted territory for USS and Terry students, but the seminar series was very successful.

“This was a form of engagement they were looking for,” Phinney said. “In the end, it was beneficial for us, too, because it showed that students are ready and willing to engage in virtual programming offered through the Office of Undergraduate Student Services.”

When students returned to campus this fall, USS was ready with a calendar full of virtual networking events. The shift will help them keep students, recruiters and alumni safe while serving more students.
