New York Times profiles David Lowery

David Lowery, lecturer in the Music Business Program, is profiled by the New York Times for his outspoken views on musician compensation in the digital age.

The article traces Lowery’s success as the front man of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven to his recent turns as an academic and iconoclastic musicians’ rights spokesman.

“People say, ‘Hey, man, you can’t fight this, we’re moving from ownership to access,’ ” Lowery said. “That’s exactly why I’m fighting it. We have to get it right. I want to get those rates right.” Speaking of young musicians like his students at the University of Georgia, he added, “I want them to have the same advantages I’ve had, to get paid fairly.”
