M. Scott Polley, ARM is an accomplished insurance/risk management professional, educator and musician that has been advising commercial clients for over 40 years. Originally a high school government teacher and baseball coach, Scott began his insurance career in Southeastern Virginia with the Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Companies and has held various positions of increasing responsibility in Richmond, Las Vegas and Atlanta with some of the most recognizable names in the insurance industry, including Zurich, Alexander & Alexander, Marsh & McLennan, Wells Fargo Insurance Services and Nationwide. Scott is currently President of VerTerra Insurance Company, a specialty property insurer writing CAT business in Florida and California.
In addition to his full-time insurance career, Scott also served as an adjunct faculty member at The University of Georgia, where he taught Risk Management & Insurance classes at the Terry College of Business in 1999 and 2000. Scott is returning to Terry to teach the RMIN 4000 class beginning in the Fall Semester of 2014. He received his Associate in Risk Management designation from the Insurance Institute of America in 2007. Scott received his BS Degree in Education in 1973 from North Carolina Wesleyan College.
From 1998-2001 Scott, along with six other Atlanta based insurance industry veterans, joined together to form “The Marsh Blues Brokers”. The band played a series of concerts throughout the U.S. to fund scholarships for aspiring RMIN students, as well as entertain clients and colleagues at industry conventions. Opening for the Commodores in New Orleans and The Drifters at the House of Blues in Chicago were highlights of the tour.
Following 14 years in Las Vegas, where he specialized in complex construction, hospitality/leisure and transportation clients, Scott returned to Atlanta in March of 2014 to launch his own insurance & risk management consulting business. Joined by his wife Renee Harney Polley, a successful insurance executive and 1990 graduate of the RMIN program at the Terry College of Business, along their six rescued dogs and two cats, live in Brookhaven, GA, where they enjoy remodeling their mid-century modern home and Scott enjoys playing his drums and bass in his spare time.
