Aplia Experiment Instructions/Information

The course key for Prof. Trandel's class is: LJU9-542G-H3XP

Cost: $15

Date of Experiments: Monday, September 15th, 2008

As one of the ECON 2106 course requirements this semester, you are asked to participate in an on-line experiment run by a company called Aplia.

To participate, you need to register with Aplia in advance, and then be in front of any computer that has internet access at the designated time.  Computers in UGA labs should work fine.

Please note that you need to register and pay for your course at least one hour prior to participating in the experiment.  This deadline is needed because the Aplia software needs to know the number of participants in each section so that roles can be properly assigned to players.  If you miss the deadline, you'll (at best) be able only to observe the experiment; you won't be able to actively play.

Depending on which time best fits your schedule, you can choose to participate in the Aplia experiments at either 10:10 a.m.. or 12:20 p.m. on September 15th.  If you so desire, you're free to choose an experiment time that doesn't match your regular class time.

When you register with Aplia, you'll be asked to choose between signing up for the "10:10 section" or the "12:20 section".  [Note: Aplia's menu selections are set up to announce times on the hour, and at 15, 30, and 45 minutes past the hour.  You may therefore see 10:15 or 12:15 appearing in places on the Aplia page; we'll actually be starting at 10:10 and 12:20.]

The experiment will take about 50 minutes; it will not run past the end of the relevant class period.

If you register for one time period and for some reason later realize that you prefer another time, you won't be able to switch times youself, nor will you be able to participate at any time other than the one for which you are registered.  So ... choose carefully.  If you really need to switch times, please send your request to support@aplia.com or to Prof. Trandel as soon as possible.  Note: this change must be made at least one hour before the start of the relevant experiment.

As noted on the syllabus, the experiment is designed for students to participate as individuals.  However, to give students the chance to share the $15 fee, two or three students are allowed to participate in the Aplia experiment as a group.  Students who choose this option must all be in the same physical location, and must make their decisions during the experiment together.

Students who wish to participate as a group must e-mail the names of the members of the group --- and a phone number at which they can be reached during the experiment --- to Prof. Trandel no later than Friday, September 12th.

If you do form a group, only one of you should register (and pay) with Aplia.

If -- as part of another class -- you've already participated in the Aplia experiments, you may not have to do so again this semester. Please talk to Prof. Trandel about your situation. If you have used the Aplia web site in other ways, but have not done the experiments, then you are required to participate in this activity this semester.

How to register

Depending on when you register for the class, you'll either see -- or you'll be able to see by clicking on "View All Assignments" -- two "Preparing For ..." assignments.  These are short tutorials that explain how the experiments work.  Please look at (at least) the first tutorial (the one on the "equilibrium price and quantity experiment") before the time you are scheduled to participate in the experiment.

Problems with registration or sign in?  Click the "Support" link in the upper-right corner of any Aplia page (or e-mail support@aplia.com).
