Dr. Calbos is an adjunct professor in the Management Information Systems department in the Terry College of Business.  He has retired from active administrative work. His career spans over thirty years of progressively responsible positions in the IT industry, most recently as interim CIO and Associate Provost at the University of Georgia (November 2004).  Previously, he served as Director of Administrative Information Systems at the University of Georgia with major responsibilities in the management, planning, design and development of the University's central information systems. In 1975, prior to coming to the University he was Director of Information Systems for the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.  He also worked for the State of Georgia as a management analyst in Governor Carter’s Office of Planning and Budget.  He has private industry experience as a software engineer, consultant, account manager and project manager.  

 

He received his PhD in Public Administration from the University of Georgia in 1984 with major study areas in information systems and organizational behavior. He has a M. S. degree from Georgia State University and a B. S. degree in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  He periodically teaches information technology and computing courses at the University of Georgia and he does some private consulting.

 

Dr. Calbos has a long-standing relationship with several international organizations including CUMREC (The Higher Education Technology Conference) and EDUCAUSE.  He has served on multiple committees and as an officer, board member and co-host of the international CUMREC conference in Atlanta.

 

Dennis and his wife, Carol, have grown children -- three sons and one daughter.  Carol is a retired primary school counselor and currently works part-time as a GED examiner for Athens Technical College.  His daughter is a graduate of the University of Georgia Law School and practices law in Atlanta and California.   One son graduated from the University of Tennessee and the University of Memphis – he is a practicing IT professional. Another son is in the U. S. Coast Guard, stationed at the Mayport Navy base.  The youngest son graduated from Georgia College and State University and works in the hospitality industry.  Dennis is active in community and service activities such as Rotary International, the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation, and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.  He enjoys reading, photography, jogging, swimming, hiking, boating, gardening, and travel.
