Supplemental Reading Assignments

Answer the following questions about your assigned supplemental readings in no more than the number of single-spaced, typed pages assigned per topic/group of articles. The number is given in red along with the due date. This will necessitate you using your space well and integrating your ideas together to discuss the topic and your view of it in light of the reading of the articles. Each article is to be referred to and discussed in your paper, but do not give me the full name or author. Refer to the article ONLY by the one word in parenthesis behind the name of the article and I will know which article you are discussing. Do not include the parenthesis in your titleRemember to bold and italicize the first use of the article's title, and only refer to the article by the short name that is provided behind the article's title in parenthesis.  Failure to follow directions results in unnecessary and avoidable points lost.

thumbtack reminder   When writing about the articles and your views, keep in mind that some of the articles may get a rise out of you and you find yourself reacting rather strongly.  I don't mind that, as long as you keep two things in mind: 1) that despite your wish to rant and rave, you must cogently address the issues in the articles and analyze and discuss them intelligently, and 2) the goal of the class is to teach you how to avoid workplace liability for Title VII violations.  As to the latter, remember that while you may have your own personal views, for the purpose of our papers, you want to concentrate on how the issues in the articles will impact the workplace or liability related to it.  Do not write only about how awful you think the situations are.  Analyze the pieces and give insightful input into what this means for the workplace and the issue of race in society in general.  Cursory answers and those not dealing with analyzing the workplace implications will not be given credit. A notation of "cursory" on your paper means you did not deal with the issue in sufficient depth and thus did not receive full credit.

Gender

No more than one page. All readings in this section are to be included in the paper.

thumbtack reminderKeep in mind that gender can be a rather uncomfortable topic to deal with because it seems so much easier to relate to than some of the other topics and you find yourself giving personal views rather than keeping in mind the theme of the class, which is avoiding liability.  While you may include your personal views, don't allow personal views to interfere with your ability to clearly see and analyze the issues.  Analyze the pieces, don't just comment on them.  I will be holding you very hard and fast to this rule.
