• Database-centric environment (information spaces) to store documents and have discussions
    Team Portals are popping up in a wide range of flavors, all focusing on building a single doorway or entrance to services to support teams. Here are some I found.
    • TeamRoom (see Course Material, see Resources: Technology Tools): One of the primary tools you can use to support your teams is a Lotus/IBM application called TeamRoom. Case studies are provided in the TeamRoom entry in Course Material.
    • Team Portals (see Course Mateial, see Resources: Technology Tools) Many have free versions. Team Portal is a single doorway or entrance to services to support teams. Good example, Webspace: http://www.copernus.com/ (see demo)
    • http://www.lotus.com/products/qplace.nsf/homepage/$first QuickPlace is the web implementation of Lotus TeamRoom.     • http://www.webex.com/home/default.htm Offers team office space and meeting software; has free version
    • Attached you will a short article on and list of web-based Project Management software that provide a collaborative workspace that allows you to share and manage information associated with projects and their related tasks. Article contains process for calculating the cost savings of using an online tool instead of Microsoft Project. onProject has a free demo.
  • Communication-centric Environment
    • Email (Outlook, Eurdora, Lotus Notes, etc.), listservs (group emails)

    • Real time/Synchronous tools
      • Real time or instant messaging (IM): ICQ, AOL, MSN Messenger, Lotus Real Time (http://web.icq.com/) Some are free
        • http://www.trillian.cc/ provides IM tool that integrates all other IM products (you can contact anyone using other IM products)
      • Audio/Video conferencing: I would recommend Netmeeting for working in Dyads especially if sharing application (Word, Excel, etc.)
        • NetMeeting: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/netmeeting/ Free If you have Windows 2000, you will find Netmeeting already loaded: under Strart menu, click programs, go to accessories and then communications. We have a server set up for NetMeeting use: misalum.terry.uga.edu
        • In Windows XP, Microsoft have integrated MSN messenger (IM tool) with Netmeeting, the product is called Windows Messenger. It comes with all versions of Windows XP, see http://messenger.microsoft.com/
        • Phonefree: http://www.phonefree.com/ Free
      • Meeting support tools (see Course Material for Summary, see Resources: Technology Tools)

        • https://www.centra.com Provides meeting software. Free version for up to 5 people (time limit too) Centra was just bought by Smartforce, one of the largest e-learning providers (you will visit Smartforce in one of your homeworks).         • Placeware http://www.placeware.com/ Primarily for meetings; design for large broadcast meetings (handlle up to 1000+ participants; one way audio to audience; audience participates thru chat and polling features) Free version avaiable for small groups.
        • http://www.interwise.com/ Provides meeting and classroom software. We are using this software in class.
        • Note: All four of the above vendors offer a number of free presentations and trainings on variours topic. Great way to see software in actions and learn too!
      • Virtual classrooms: Meeting support tools such as CENTRA that include classroom protocols such as hand raising, etc.
  • Integrated Environments (both communication tools and information spaces/database tools)
    • Webex: Provides database workspace
    • Team Portals: most have at least chat feature
    • Groove: Peer-to-Peer environment http://www.groove.net/ Team portal with audio and instant messenging capabilities. We will be using this tool in class.
    • Community-based system: http://www.communispace.com/
