NATURE OF WORK
This is limited administrative work in the management and operation of a student supply store.
Work involves responsibility for managing a campus store with a variety of student school supplies and sundries and for related activities such as vending machines and warehouse operations. Duties include assisting in determining goods to be offered for sale, supervising a small clerical staff, assisting in pricing of merchandise, and requisitioning materials and supplies. The employee works with considerable independence within established policies and procedures and is responsible for maintaining standards of operation. Work is performed under general direction of an administrative superior.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Selects and requisitions store supply items, such as mens' furnishings, stationery, special greeting cards, leather goods, drawing paper, engineering supplies, and other consumer items.
Prepares and supervises work schedules and operating procedures governing subordinate personnel.
Supervises the stocking and servicing of campus vending machines.
Maintains a file of dealers' discounts and other purchasing information, and conducts market price studies; interviews salesmen.
Supervises and participates in preparing store decoration and displays; conducts periodic inventories.
Supervises the maintenance of inventory and related records for the store and warehouse supply center.
Maintains good relations with students and faculty.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of retail merchandising and buying.
Considerable knowledge of the administrative policies and procedures established for operation of university stores.
Some knowledge of the maintenance of sales and inventory records.
Some knowledge of advertising and promotion.
Ability to estimate sales on the basis of such criteria as enrollments in specific courses, past sales records, and stock on hand.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and patrons of university stores.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, preferably supplemented by courses in merchandising or a related field and supervisory experience in retail sales work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
