NATURE OF WORK
This is clerical and supervisory work in the management operations of campus stores.
Work involves the procurement, stocking, inventory, and sale of varied supplies such as restaurant supplies, textbooks, stationery, and other store supplies. The employee supervises a small clerical staff in retail sales work and in the maintenance of inventory and financial records. Work involves limited responsibility for determining supply needs. The employee exercises some discretion and judgment within established policies and procedures, and works under the general direction of an administrative superior.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Confers with faculty members about textbook needs; determines needs by review of past sales records, stock on hand, and availability of titles and editions.
Selects, requisitions, stocks, inventories, and accounts for restaurant supplies and sundries, stationery, note books, and other school supplies.
Places special orders for books at the request of patrons; selects and orders fiction and non-fiction books.
Trains, supervises, and participates with employees in the routine aspects of retail sales work, such as locating and selling books and supplies.
Receives and prices books and other bookstore supplies according to standard practices; arranges for the return of unsold books to publishers.
Keeps operation records of invoices, requisitions, and inventory; prepares sales reports; maintains files of textbook requirements by course.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the principles and practices of retail merchandising, pricing, and buying.
Knowledge of the maintenance of sales and inventory records.
Knowledge of advertising and sales promotional practices.
Ability to train and supervise subordinates in retail sales work.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and patrons.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school; and considerable experience in procurement or retail sales work, preferably including some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
