NATURE OF WORK
This is supervisory work in a warehouse or storeroom which involves receiving, storing, delivering, and shipping widely diversified supplies, materials, and equipment in a warehouse.
Work in this class involves responsibility for the operation of a central stores facility which serves principally as a shipping and receiving center for a variety of special and standard supplies, materials, and equipment. Duties involve maintenance of appropriate control records, considerable contact with customers, and usually include supervision of several assistants. Work is performed under general supervision and in accordance with established rules and procedures.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Inspects incoming shipments of furniture, office appliances, laboratory research apparatus, and a wide variety of other property for conformance with specifications; checks shipment against bill of lading for completeness; determines where property should be delivered or stored; supervises moving, and occasionally operates a fork lift; identifies and tags property; records receipt; issues property; assures proper handling of hazardous and dangerous materials.
Conducts or supervises periodic inventory of warehouse or storeroom materials, supplies, and equipment; stores and issues supplies and equipment; maintains running inventory.
Supervises and participates in the storage of obsolete and excess equipment, materials, and supplies; maintains and services items.
Prepares appropriate reports to supervisory personnel.
Takes orders for delivery, handles minor complaints, and in general, operates a retail sales establishment.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the nomenclature and types of property handled through the warehouse, salesroom, or storeroom to which assigned.
Considerable knowledge of standard methods and practices of warehouse or storeroom operations.
Some knowledge of store keeping and inventory methods.
Ability to learn prescribed procedures and to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep clerical records.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers, employees, and the general public.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school; and some experience related to this class of work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
