NATURE OF WORK
This is sub-professional accounting work in the maintenance of accounting and fiscal records.
Work involves performing duties which require a working knowledge of accounting procedures and bookkeeping principles. Employees of this class work within established accounting systems and procedures. Work usually involves the responsibility for the maintenance of a complete set of minor accounts, or of a major segment of a larger system. Supervision may be exercised over Accounting Clerks or other clerical assistants. Work is reviewed by a technical superior for overall standards of performance and is subject to periodic audit.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
May supervise and participate in the work of clerical assistants engaged in recording accounts receivable and accounts payable.
Posts and balances individual accounts or general ledgers; assists in preparing, adjusting, and closing journal entries.
Examines and codes invoices or vouchers for proper accounting distribution; prepares vouchers for payment and maintains a voucher register.
Compiles figures for use in the preparation of budgets.
Abstracts data reflecting financial condition and operating results and prepares various (often complex) financial reports showing statistics such as revenue and expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and profit and loss.
Checks, calculates, and prepares payrolls; prepares standard payroll related reports.
Prepares bank deposits, reconciles bank accounts.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of bookkeeping principles and procedures, and a sound understanding of a well defined sub-system within a large and complex accounting system.
Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
Ability to make complex and varied arithmetic computations and tabulations rapidly and accurately.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
DESIRABLE TRAINING EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school and completion of college level courses in bookkeeping and accounting, supplemented by considerable experience in bookkeeping and related clerical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
