NATURE OF WORK
This is a technical professional position which assists a network administrator or unit manager in planning and implementing a networked computing environment (NCE) and in identifying and resolving technical and procedural problems associated with a NCE. This position may be responsible for administering a small NCE of limited complexity, or assisting in the administration and operation of a more complicated NCE. An individual in this position may also supervise other personnel supporting the NCE.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for assisting in the use of network services, data communications, computer and network hardware, the network operating system, and networked application programs. Work includes independent solution of technical and procedural problems which are of average complexity, as well as working with appropriate professional personnel to resolve problems of greater complexity. Also included are module level hardware installation, preventive maintenance, and monitoring of the network infrastructure; assisting in reproduction of documentation; providing training services; participating in design, integration and upgrades of the NCE; and coding and testing computer programs of medium size and complexity.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Assist appropriate network support personnel and network users in resolving technical and procedural problems in the NCE. Refers severe or complex problems to the appropriate computing professionals.
Installs, configures, and performs problem determination for network hardware and software; monitors consoles and control panels where appropriate and takes corrective action to prevent system malfunctions.
Operates network communications processors including performing system loading tasks and adjusting network configuration parameters to assure maximum system availability with appropriate supervision and coordination.
Assist in developing standard systems administration utilities and procedures for monitoring the NCE. Maintains operations records for the NCE and documentation and records for related systems.
Assist in design, integration, and upgrade of the NCE; recommends acquisition of appropriate computing and networking resources to supervisory personnel.
Assembles communications devices and cabling; undertakes physical level network infrastructure alterations with appropriate supervision and coordination.
Assists with development of instructional materials for training programs; may deliver lectures and direct training activities using prepared instructional materials.
Performs telephone support for end users. Reports potential problems and system malfunctions to appropriate support personnel.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of at least one programming language and multiple system utilities.
Proficiency with at least one networking protocol, operation system, network architecture and media; exposure to inter-networking heterogeneous systems.
Knowledge of communications cabling, cable construction, and module level installation and replacement of hardware and communications devices.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE (CONTINUED)
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Some knowledge of instructional skills.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in a computer-related discipline; experience with at least one network operating system, network protocol, network architecture; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
