NATURE OF WORK
This is an entry level technical position which provides support within a networked computing environment (NCE). This position may assist in administering some aspects of the NCE under the general supervision of a network administrator or unit manager, in conjunction with experienced networking personnel.
Work includes providing assistance in the use of network services, data communications, computer and network hardware, and networked applications. Also included are module level hardware installation, trouble shooting, preventive maintenance, and monitoring of the network infrastructure. This work is performed under the provided guidelines.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Assist users in resolving technical and procedural problems in the NCE. Refers problems not covered by standard guidelines to the appropriate network support personnel.
Assists with installation and configuration of network hardware and software.
Assists in routine preventive maintenance and monitoring of the network infrastructure.
Under appropriate supervision, maintains documents and records for the NCE. Assembles communications devices and cabling. Assists in physical level network infrastructure changes.
Demonstrates the use of networked computers for prospective users and visitors. May assist in the delivery of training activities using prepared instructional materials.
Performs telephone support for end users. Reports potential problems and system malfunctions to appropriate support personnel.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some experience with at least one networking protocol, operating system, network architecture and medium.
Knowledge of communications cabling construction, module level installation, and replacement of systems and communications devices.
Some knowledge of capabilities, limitations, uses and requirements of local area, wide area, and international networks.
Some knowledge of an associated programming language or system level utilities.
Some knowledge of instructional methods.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, engineering representatives, staff, and users.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in a computer-related discipline and considerable experience in a NCE; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
