 NATURE OF WORK

 This is intermediate level programming work on a large operating computer system which may support multi-processing computer configurations.

An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for designing and coding modifications to components of the system. Work involves analyzing computer job failures to identify causes of failure and assisting in the installation of utility software components. General supervision is received and work is reviewed upon completion.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

 Performs coding and testing functions on operating system software; installs, tests, and prepares installation documentation of utility software.

Analyzes production or testing problems to determine whether they are caused by operating system software malfunctions.

Prepares instructional material for systems designers, programmers, and operators.

Assists operations personnel with operational problems when required.

Prepares and processes administrative reports.

Performs related work as required.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

 Considerable knowledge of assembler programming language, operating system utility programs, and job control language for appropriate computer.

Considerable knowledge of higher level programming language.

Considerable knowledge of applicable computer hardware.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

 Graduation from a college or university with major course work in information science or a related field. Considerable experience in programming, operating systems analysis or a related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
