NATURE OF WORK
Prepares, implements, and tests supplied corrections or changes to the operating system. In a training capacity, under increasingly more general supervision, assumes progressively more responsible work on the computer operating system. Assists a higher level Systems Support Specialist by preparing, testing, and documenting complex computer programs. Duties require considerable technical competence, are of average difficulty, and are performed under increasingly general supervision.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Receives on-the-job training in the generation and maintenance of the computer operating systems(s).
Assists Systems Support Specialist of a higher level in the generation and maintenance of operating systems and in the determination of program problem or hardware malfunction.
Assists operations personnel in utilizing the computers through formal or informal training and through technical assistance to the operator.
Assists systems analysis and programming personnel by advising, by designing, and by implementing those portions of application programs involving actual communication with remote teleprocessing stations.
Generates, installs, and maintains computer programs which extend the capabilities of the operating system or which provide services to more than one user agency.
Assists, as necessary, systems analysis and programming personnel in debugging program problems and in the creation of job control cards.
Assists Systems Support Specialists of a higher level to monitor the daily use of computer hardware in order to correct problems and enhance operations.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of computer programming, of current computer language(s), and of the primary computer language used in creation of the operation system.
Knowledge of the use and limitations of EDP equipment and of the methods and techniques of operating systems analysis.
Considerable skill in writing successful programs.
Considerable ability to solve problems logically using inductive or deductive reasoning; to present facts orally or in writing; to maintain a working knowledge of technological developments in the EDP field; and to work cooperatively with others.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a college or university with major course work in information science or a related field. Considerable experience in programming, operating systems analysis, or a related area; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
