NATURE OF WORK
The individual assigned to this class of work performs a wide variety of data processing functions ranging from the operation of small computers to the coding of small computer programs. Work is performed under the direction of a senior level programmer, systems designer, information analyst, or manager.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Assists with the coding, entry, and updating of source programs under the direction of higher level programmers, designers, or analysts.
Modifies existing programs to meet varying output requirements and performs those activities necessary to prepare jobs for submission, monitors their progress, and verifies and distributes computer output.
Develops and maintains system-related documentation.
Coordinates run schedules with both data processing personnel and system users, monitors the usage of compute tapes, direct access space, and other computer resources and maintains an adequate inventory of data processing supplies.
Performs operator-type functions for small computer systems including the scheduling of work to be performed, the monitoring of system operation, analyzing problems which arise to determine the cause, and taking remedial steps or applying standard operator techniques for their solution.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of modern office principles and procedures.
Considerable typing proficiency and the ability to become proficient as a computer terminal operator.
Ability to develop and maintain records and filing systems for maintaining accurate information related to operational activities, supplies usage, program documentation, and run procedures.
Some knowledge of data processing principles and procedures.
Ability to learn computer operation methods and techniques and to communicate effectively with computer operators, control, and programming personnel.
Some knowledge of a computer programming language and job control language or the ability and desire to develop this knowledge.
Ability to apply knowledge to new and various problems.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or technical school with course work in data processing. Experience in operating computers or in computer production control or scheduling. Experience outside of data processing which demonstrates the knowledge, abilities, skills, and desire to further develop as outlined above.
