NATURE OF WORK

This is technical work in the operation of large-scale electronic computers.

Work involves initializing the operation systems, operating all in-house computers, and monitoring system performance by means of a console. Work involves initializing and monitoring on-line terminal systems ensuring the system integrity is maintained. Work involves responding to messages for system software and applications programs and adjusting the configuration of the operation system as required by production and testing schedules.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Performs manual operation of electronic computer systems and related peripheral equipment.

Monitors control panels and takes corrective steps or utilizes standard operator techniques to prevent machine malfunction.

Assists the lead operator in ensuring maximum utilization of all computers and performs duties of lead operator when necessary.

Determines whether machine malfunction or program failure caused the error or stoppage.

Applies previously programmed corrective steps or standard operator techniques in cases of machine error or stoppage.

Performs related work as required.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Considerable knowledge of the operation of large-scale electronic computers and their auxiliary equipment.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and concepts involved in the optimization of job scheduling.

Considerable knowledge of applicable programming techniques.

Ability to understand and to utilize machine languages.

Ability to detect systems problems and to make appropriate corrections.

 

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

 

Graduation from a standard high school or technical school and experience in working with production schedules, console operation, and data communication; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
