NATURE OF WORK

 This is professional data processing work in identifying and resolving technical and procedural problems associated with the use of computer systems.

An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for assisting faculty, staff, and students with the use of computer systems, including the identification and resolution of procedural and technical problems; preparing documentation and training materials; teaching seminars, classes, and short courses; installing computer hardware and software according to vendors' instructions for user-installed systems; and coding and testing computer programs of medium size and complexity. Work is performed under general supervision of an administrative superior, usually in conjunction with more experienced date processing personnel.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

 Assists faculty, staff, and students in identifying and correcting problems encountered in the use of computer systems; refers severe or complex problems to the appropriate professional computing personnel.

Operates on-line and off-line equipment in analyzing and resolving problems associated with computer system use, in coding and testing computer software, and in providing training and assistance for computer users.

Installs and customizes computer hardware and software in accordance with vendor-supplied installation instructions; performs diagnostic testing and checkout, as specified.

Assists in the documentation of new and existing computer programs, systems, and services.

Assists with the development of instructional materials for training programs; delivers lectures and directs training activities using prepared instructional materials.

Performs related work as required.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 Considerable experience in using computer systems and software packages in an appropriate class of computer applications.

Considerable knowledge of one major high level programming language, or a comparable non-procedural software package, and the characteristics of a computer system on which the language of software package is used.

Some knowledge of an additional programming language or non-procedural software package.

Some knowledge of the general principles of electronic data processing, including compatibilities, limitations, uses, and architectures of computer systems.

Some knowledge of an appropriate class of computer applications.

Some knowledge of the conventions and practices used in documenting computer hardware and software systems.

Some knowledge of instructional methods.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

 Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in an appropriate field computer application, major course work in data processing or computer science, and experience in using computer systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
