NATURE OF WORK

This is technical work in identifying and resolving technical and procedural problems associated with the use of computer systems.

An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for assisting faculty, staff, and students with the use of computer terminals, micro-computers, printers, and related peripheral equipment, including the identification and resolution of procedural and technical problems and the installation of computer hardware and software for user-installed systems. Work is performed under general supervision of an administrative superior, usually in conjunction with more experienced date processing personnel.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Provides technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students in using computer terminals and other peripheral devices connected to computer systems; provides technical assistance in diagnosing technical programs with computer peripherals.

Coordinates the scheduling, operations, and staff support services of computer laboratories and similar satellite computer service locations.

Demonstrates the use of computer systems for faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Installs computer peripherals in accord with vendor-supplied installation instructions; performs diagnostic testing and checkout, as specified.

Monitors the performance of computer systems, including the use of direct access storage devices and other peripherals; reports potential problems and system malfunctions to administrative and systems programming personnel.

Creates and maintain user profiles, accounting records, and related system administrative records for computer systems.

Maintains operations records for computer systems; maintains files of documentation and related materials for distribution.

Provides limited clerical support services for computer site operations, such as telephone services, some data entry keyboarding, and document distribution.

Performs related work as required.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the operation of electronic computers and related peripheral equipment.

Some knowledge of one major high level programming language, or a comparable non-procedural software package, and the characteristics of a computer system on which the language or software package is used.

Some knowledge of the general principles of electronic data processing, including capabilities, limitations, uses, and architectures of computer systems.

Considerable experience in operating keyboarding equipment, including data entry terminals, word processors, and micro-computers.

Experience in monitoring the operation of computer systems, detecting systems and production problems, and initiating corrective action.

Some experience in using computer systems and software packages in an appropriate class of computer applications.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in data processing or computer science and experience in using computer systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
