NATURE OF WORK
This is technical work in the operation of electronic computers.
Work involves responsibility for operating electronic computer(s) and related peripheral equipment. An employee allocated to this class of work monitors control panels and takes appropriate action to correct machine malfunctions to ensure maximum equipment utilization. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed by results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Monitors console messages and reacts according to directions from systems software or applications programs.
Observes systems operations and determines whether programs appear to be operating correctly.
Analyzes potential problems and takes corrective action where called for or seeks assistance from system programmer where causes of problems are not apparent.
Adjusts multi-programming configuration of operating system as required by production and testing schedule.
Maintains records required to supplement console log, including problem documentation, and actions taken, computer utilization logs, file identification, and similar data.
Performs procedures required for system backup, including copying system files, checkpoints, message logs, etc.
Directs activities of peripheral equipment operators to ensure accurate response to job stream requirements.
Maintains production schedules for work processed on the computer.
Optimize computer loading according to system software configuration and work available within a given time period.
Identifies system malfunctions and initiates corrective action to maintain schedules and to ensure integrity of production files and outputs.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the operation of electronic computers and related peripheral equipment.
Some knowledge of applicable programming techniques.
Ability to understand and to utilize machine control language(s).
Ability to detect systems and production problems and to make appropriate recommendations for corrections.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school supplemented by college level or technical school work and extensive experience in working with production schedules, console operations, and data communication; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
