NATURE OF WORK
This is supervisory and clerical work in maintaining a library of magnetic tapes and disk files for electronic data processing purpose.
An employee allocated to this class of work supervises and participates in the clerical work performed in a tape library. Work involves storing, cleaning, and retrieving information from magnetic tapes and disk files and administering a tape verification and maintenance control system for all library tapes. Work is performed independently under the general direction of a technical superior.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Supervises the work of clerical subordinates involved in maintaining a tape library.
Trains new personnel in the procedures and policies of the tape library.
Operates tape cleaning equipment.
Maintains a standardized magnetic tape and disk file library and records tape usage and location.
Performs storage and retrieval functions for magnetic tapes and disk files; prepares index cards for file reference.
Maintains a tape and disk volume control system.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of data processing operations, procedures, and terminology.
Considerable knowledge of techniques in maintaining a tape library.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to understand and execute oral or written instructions.
Skill in the operation of tape library equipment and standard office equipment.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school and some experience as a tape librarian; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
