NATURE OF WORK

Enters a variety of coded data processing information directly into a computer system through a computer terminal according to clearly defined practices and procedures of the specialized area to which assigned. Duties are performed under general supervision and require the exercise of some independent judgment and basic clerical decision-making within established guidelines.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Reviews documents coded for specific operation (such as accounting or personnel) for obvious errors or omissions prior to entering the coded information into the terminal.

Brings obvious errors or omissions in coded documents to attention of appropriate supervisor or coding clerk.

Enters coded information directly into a computer system by use of a terminal.

Operates printer attached to computer terminal to produce written record of program entries and changes when necessary.

Insures adequacy of supplies necessary for smooth operation of computer terminal.

Brings equipment failures and similar problems interfering with computer terminal operation to the attention of appropriate officials in a timely manner.

Makes inquiries by use of the terminal for staff or for informational purposes.

Performs related work as required.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, or procedures of the unit to which assigned and of terminal entry procedures.

Skill in entering or retrieving information by use of a computer terminal.

Ability to handle complex clerical assignments to completion, recognizing obvious clerical errors and omissions.

Ability to type accurately from plain copy at the rate of 40 words per minute.

Ability to make moderately complex arithmetical computations.

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High school graduate with courses in typing or keypunching. One year of full-time, paid employment in a clerical capacity which included the use of a typewriter.
