NATURE OF WORK

This is entry-level work, training in the various aspects of a university printing department.

An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the area of the pressroom, the bindery, and general business operations. Work is performed under close supervision.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Trains in the basics of printing services by working with skilled craftsmen in various areas of printing.

Receives all incoming supplies; records all paper inventory in the warehouse and in the manager's office.

Checks shipment invoice against purchase order and processes for payment.

Stacks paper shipments in the warehouse using a forklift.

Operates Heidelberg and C & P letter presses.

Cuts all paper needed for jobs; trims completed jobs; carries jobs from the press area to the bindery.

Ships out all printed materials from the printing department.

Performs related duties as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of simple mathematics.

Skill in keeping records.

Skill in operating a forklift.

Ability to operate a paper cutter; ability to learn the different paper cuts and trims required by the bindery.

Ability to learn paper stock and inventory systems.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school, supplemented by some experience in physical labor; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
