NATURE OF WORK

This is semi-skilled mechanical work in binding books, reports, and other printed materials.

Work involves performing hand and machine operations in binding a variety of books, reports, and other printed materials. An employee of this class separates books and reports, collates volumes, punches, drills, trims, folds, assembles, pads, and numbers varied types of printed materials. These functions involve the operation of letter presses and punching, drilling, stapling, and binding machines. This class of work differs from Bindery Equipment Operator II in both the skill level of machine operation and by the kinds and number of machines operated. Work is performed under general supervision with assistance readily available and is reviewed by inspection for accuracy and conformity with instructions and established quality standards.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Assembles books, reports, and other printed materials manually or by machine, binds books and reports with stitches, glue, staples, plastic spirals, and tape, using standard binding equipment.

Checks assembled product for printing errors and sequence of page numbers.

Punches reports and other bound material using punching machine.

Trims edges of books, reports, and other bound material using a mechanical paper trimmer.

Sorts, counts, and packages printed materials for delivery to clients.

Melts lead and operates strip casting machine; operates a letter press for limited volume printing jobs.

Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of book binding.

Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade of book binding.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to keep routine records.

Ability to operate and perform minor repairs on binding ship equipment.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and considerable experience in book binding work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
