NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled printing work in the operation of a complex electronic photo typesetting system and other related printing equipment.

An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for the quality preparation of folders, brochures, booklets, and other related printing jobs. Work involves the operation of electronic photo typesetting equipment, typesetting and processing machines, and other related equipment. Work assignments are received in terms of materials to be produced. Work is performed under general supervision of a PHOTO TYPESETTER II for adherence to quality standards and compliance with instructions.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Places input data into the input keyboard machine.

Edits tapes for errors made in the original input and corrects errors on the correction terminal.

Processed edited tapes through PHOTO TYPESETTER to produce input data photographically on photo paper.

Operates processing machine to develop typeface.

Runs galley proofs for customers to be checked for errors.

Corrects errors in proofs by using editing terminal.

Routes edited tapes through PHOTO TYPESETTER equipment to produce materials in processing form.

Pastes up jobs into page forms to be assembled on the mechanical.

Performs some limited mark up for jobs to be produced on photo typesetting machines.

Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of business and literary English , spelling, grammar, and usage.

Knowledge of the routines and procedures involved in job printing.

Ability to understand and carry out technical instructions received verbally or in writing.

Skill in the operation of a typesetter.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and experience related to this class of work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
