NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work in the operation of the larger types of offset presses, from a minimum size of 14 x 20 up through 23 x 36, plus the related printing methods.

An employee allocated to this class is responsible for the operation of 14 x 20 and larger offset presses that use metal plates made from negatives, which can run from one color up to four color processes. Work involves responsibility for the operation, adjustment, and maintenance of offset presses 14 x 20 and larger. Work assignments are received in terms of materials to be produced. Work is performed under general supervision of a technical superior and is reviewed for clarity and neatness.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Operates, cleans, and maintains at least one offset press with sizes of 16 3/8 x 2 up through 25 2 x 36 inches in reproducing folders, brochures, books, and other related material.

Prepares press by putting on plate, mixing and putting ink in fountain loading feeders, gumming and wrapping plates, maintaining plate file, and making other adjustments to run job.

Assists other offset press operators and offset equipment operators in minor problems on equipment.

Keeps track of supplies and places orders as needed.

Performs other duties in press area such as pulling paper, operating guillotine paper-cutting machine, turning skids of paper, and keeping work area clean and orderly.

Performs related work is required.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of an offset press.

Considerable knowledge of a wide variety of uses of offset machinery and the various types of plates.

Considerable knowledge of the various kinds and grades of paper and ink.

Ability to detect defects in printed material while in process and make adjustments to correct them.

Ability to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to help employees in the use of printing equipment and techniques.

 

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school and thorough experience in the operation of a wide variety of offset presses; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
