NATURE OF WORK

This is routine postal work in the handling, delivering, and collecting of incoming and outgoing institutional mail and parcels throughout the campus.

Work involves delivering mail from the campus or United States Post Office to designated buildings and offices and collecting out-going mail and parcels to be processed through the campus post office. Duties also include performing such related tasks as sorting incoming mail and loading and unloading trucks as required. Most work is performed with little direct supervision and is normally reviewed through observation of performance and results.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Delivers mail and parcels on foot and/or by vehicle to the various offices and buildings of the institution and collects out-going mail to be weighed and stamped by the campus post office. Delivers accountable mail to departments requiring a signature as proof of delivery.

Assists in sorting incoming and outgoing mail. Delivers and picks up mail from the United States Post Office facilities as required.

Runs errands and participates in housekeeping duties on a limited basis.

Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Some knowledge of United States Postal Service rules and regulations.

Considerable knowledge of the location of institutional organizations and offices.

Ability to learn the rules and procedures relative to distribution and collecting mail.

Ability to read addresses proficiently to deliver mail effectively.

Ability to walk for long periods, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

Ability to deal with people in a pleasant and courteous manner.

Ability to lift and carry heavy weights, such as loading or unloading mail trucks and delivery of heavy parcels as required.

Skill in operating light vehicles.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard high school and some experience in work providing a familiarity with the location of institutional organizations and offices; some experience operating light vehicles; some experience handling mail, including the operation of standard mail room equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

A valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class 1).
