NATURE OF WORK
This is specialized sub-professional and supervisory library work performed in a functional unit or branch of the main library, or other university library facilities.
Employees of this class apply a knowledge of modern library methods and techniques in performance of varied library work and sub-professional library duties of considerable complexity including use of on-line computer equipment. Work requires a familiarity with standard library organization and routines which may be gained through considerable experience in library work or through special training in library science. Employees exercise some discretion and judgment in performing assigned duties and in supervising lower level assistants in performing routine sub-professional tasks, although advice and assistance in are readily available from professional or para-professional personnel. Routine tasks, once learned, are ordinarily performed without direct supervision. Work may be subject to periodic checks, but is primarily reviewed through conferences and observations of results.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Supervises a complex public service function, such as a circulation desk or reserve book section.
Supervises lower level library assistants and clerical assistants; trains, assigns, and supervises student assistants.
Verifies bibliographically difficult to locate information on books or periodicals to be ordered or cataloged.
Operates computer terminal for OCLC cataloging; inputs cataloging records prepared by professional librarian; makes changes on OCLC cards for adaptation to local library.
Assists readers in making effective use of library facilities.
Supervises library routines at circulation desk or in catalog or reference departments or audio-visual.
Maintains and assimilates library statistics.
Prepares claims for missing periodicals from publisher.
Prepares orders for required documents for monthly catalog.
Maintains continuation file.
Checks and distributes Library of Congress (or OCLC) cards; pulls shelf and content cards, and adds proper information; routes pieces for cataloging.
Orders and shows film for local schools, faculty, and students; books audio-visual equipment.
Corresponds with film users, sponsors, film producers, and distributors.
Supervises audio-visual software.
Directs periodic inventory.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and materials of library science in relation to acquisition, cataloging, classification, bibliography, circulation, reference, media, and library related computer facilities.
Some knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
Ability to perform varied library routine work with speed and accuracy.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, faculty members, and subordinate employees.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a accredited college or university with emphasis in library science and considerable experience as a library assistant; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
