NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced sub-professional library work.
Work involves specific responsibilities for a special sub-professional phase of library work such as limited cataloging, or supervision of a reading room or similar section of the library. The work includes supervision of student assistants and may include supervision of subordinate library personnel, and assisting patrons in the use of the library. Employees of this class are expected to work independently following established practices and procedures. The work is under the general supervision of a Library Assistant III, a para-professional, or a professional. Work is reviewed by observation of results and may include conferences.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Checks, numbers, and files government documents.
Searches all sources for information on books or periodicals to be ordered; partial authorization for computer search.
May prepare purchase orders and verify invoices for the acquisition of new books.
Processes books sent to and received from bindery.
Assists library patrons with questions and problems.
May operate a computer terminal.
Totals fines and makes weekly reports.
Files catalog cards for central and branch libraries; checks and distributes Library of Congress (or OCLC) cards.
Prepares cards and records for serial acquisition; keeps records of serials and pamphlets received.
Sorts, compiles lists of, and exchanges duplicate holdings.
Schedules audio-visual equipment.
Takes periodic inventory; inventories and orders supplies.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of basic library procedures, methods, and techniques.
Some knowledge of books and periodicals of the types found in a university library.
Some knowledge of bibliography at the university level.
Ability to assign and supervise the work of student assistants and the work of subordinate library assistants.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons.
Ability to use the typewriter, other office equipment, audio-visual equipment, microfilm equipment, photo duplication machines, and peripheral devices used by computer-based library systems.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school and completion of college level courses in library science, supplemented by experience as a library assistant; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
