NATURE OF WORK

This is library work of a beginning level in assisting the various phases of library operation and may include directing student assistants at a beginning level.

Work involves mostly clerical tasks, but the emphasis is on the application of some knowledge of library materials and use. Work includes the performance of some specialized, sub-professional library duties of limited complexity. Work follows a degree of routine and established practices and procedures and the employee is expected to perform certain work independently after a reasonable period of training and indoctrination. Work is subject to close supervision and review by a higher level library assistant or a professional librarian. Work is reviewed by observation of results.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Checks books or periodicals received against library orders; numbers new books and enters on lists; processes gifts; proofreads call numbers.

Checks in periodicals and supervises distribution of departmental libraries and display racks; prepares routine claims for missing periodicals from publishers; prepares periodicals for binding and makes shipment lists.

Prepares orders for required documents from monthly catalog; prepares cards and records for serial acquisitions; keeps records of serials pamphlets received.

Assists at a circulation desk on relief basis; collects and prepares circulation statistics; issues microfilm and cleans microfilm readers; collects and records fines.

Searches purchase requests received from departments to avoid duplication of purchases; drafts and duplicates exchange list.

Checks books, briefcases, etc., as persons leave library.

Assists with periodic inventory.

Operates photo reproducing equipment; replaces paper in all reproducing equipment.

Operates slide, filmstrip, film, record, and tape equipment; changes bulbs in all A-V equipment; cleans and lubricates film and record material.

Assists patrons in use of the library.

May shelve books, periodicals, and reference materials.

Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Some knowledge of basic library procedures, methods, and techniques.

Some knowledge of office procedures and practices.

Some knowledge of media principles and equipment.

Ability to perform routine clerical and records keeping tasks.

Ability to deal with library patrons tactfully and courteously.

Skill in the use of a typewriter.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard high school supplemented by experience in library or general clerical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
