NATURE OF WORK
This is complex and difficult work involving the skilled operation of a word processor in a production environment. This class is limited to those positions whose duties require a high percentage of time in the operation of word processing equipment capable of data storage, format coding text editing, and text rearranging. Work is performed with relative independence after explanation of desired results. Work is reviewed by observation of results by the originator or supervisor.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Types from original input, handwritten or printed, correspondence, grants, research proposal, reports, and manuscripts.
Types/transcribes from recorded dictation.
Processes special projects and confidential work as assigned.
Sets up and maintains library file of stored material.
Proofs data to insure accurate transcription and format adherence.
Writes glossaries when necessary to facilitate effective use of word processing equipment of various projects.
Consults with originators on submitted material to clarify instructions, handwriting or to alternative formats.
Identifies and resolves minor equipment problems. Coordinates major problems with service representative.
Types routine as well as highly technical, statistical or scientific reports, research papers, manuscripts, correspondence, and memos; may type languages such as Russian, German, Greek or Hebrew; types using complex statistical or mathematical symbols.
May operate various office machines such as duplicator, calculator, or transcribing equipment.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable skill in the use of word processing equipment; skill in proofreading; skill in setting up manuscripts or tabular material.
Considerable skill in typing, especially in foreign languages and mathematical symbols; skill in setting up manuscripts or tabular material neatly and correctly.
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and to type clearly and correctly from draft of corrected manuscripts.
Knowledge of office practices and procedures, of good English usage, and of spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
Ability to deal with the service users and the public tactfully and courteously.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, including curses in typing and business. Six months experience in the operation of word processing equipment capable of data storage, format coding, and text editing; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
