NATURE OF WORK
This is complex and difficult work involving skilled operation of a typewriter in a specialized clerical area. Performance of duties may require independent judgment and initiative in completing assignments. An employee in this class may develop standard procedures for routine projects. However, when assignments depart from established rules and policies, the supervisor may instruct. Duties are performed under general supervision.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Types and transcribes technical, statistical or scientific reports, research papers, and manuscripts; types in foreign languages such as German, Greek or Hebrew; types using complex statistical or mathematical symbols.
Compiles, edits, types, and proofs special reports.
Operates various office machines such as duplicators, calculators, Xerox machines, and transcribing equipment.
Answers telephone to assist receptionist or secretary; types routine correspondence and memos; collates reports and exams; sorts and distributes mail.
Performs related work as required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures.
Considerable knowledge of good English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Considerable skill in typing, especially in foreign languages and mathematical symbols; skill in proofreading; skill in setting up manuscripts or tabular material neatly and correctly.
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and to type clearly and correctly from draft or corrected manuscripts.
Ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously and to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, including courses in typing and business and some experience in typing and clerical work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
