NATURE OF WORK

This is difficult, non-routine typing work which involves skill in the operation of a typewriter and in proofreading, and ability in setting up copy.

Employees of this class work on more complex and varied tasks than Clerk Typist I and are expected to perform satisfactorily with a minimum of supervision. The work may contain complex equations and tabulations. Employees in this class must be able to resolve specific problems by reference to the complex style manuals used in preparing research reports. They must show initiative and exercise judgment in setting up copy. they are expected to produce high quality copy, and accordingly must be able to anticipate difficulties that would prevent getting high quality results; they must be able to recognize inconsistencies and deviations from good practice; and they must be able to deal effectively with report authors with a minimum of supervision.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Performs difficult typing tasks on stencils or offset masters; types theses, manuals, exams, and reports, requiring the use of chemical and mathematical symbols, foreign languages, and technical terminology; proofreads, duplicates, and collates typed materials.

Does some checking of format of reports. May maintain filing systems.

Receives and processes forms and reviews them for accuracy and completeness.

May take dictation; operates standard office equipment.

May perform general clerical duties.

Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Ability to type rapidly and accurately from all types of copy.

Ability to proof copy effectively.

Ability to understand instructions.

Knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic.

Knowledge of office practices and procedures.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard high school, including courses in typing and general business, supplemented by some typing and clerical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
