Welcome

Chair Darren DeVore called the meeting to order, introduced conference call participants, and welcomed new Council member Gina Drosos and guests. Devore announced that Richard Courts IV has agreed to co-chair the Corporate Engagement Task Force and thanked Kessel Stelling for his work as co-chair of the Task Force for the past two years.

College Report

Dean Sumichrast discussed Terry’s significant progress and future opportunities. Thanks to the generosity of Council Members and Terry Alumni, despite reduced state funding for the University, the College’s spending budget has not been significantly impacted. Council members and alumni have a crucial part in improving the Terry Experience thanks to their involvement in many events. The results are clear and include improvements in: rankings, placement, programs and the reputation of recruited faculty. The College is well on its way to National Prominence. Sumichrast announced Terry’s upcoming AACSB maintenance of accreditation visit in February. Following discussions on online education, the College is taking a phased approach. This summer, selected Terry courses will be available online. The College is also considering two online programs. The PBBA would target businesses and provide high quality degrees for their working professionals. The Master of Internet Technology is a technical degree, whose participation and popularity would increase greatly if available online. These online programs, if successful, could increase College revenue and help integration with the business community. Sumichrast confirmed that a search committee for the next Terry Dean is being formed; its ambitious goal is to select a new dean by Summer 2013.

Building Terry Campaign Update

Martee Horne reviewed the goals of the Campaign and announced that over $5M have been raised since November 2012. Horne thanked the Council members and Alumni for their continued support. Horne showed a table summarizing the various gift levels and pointed out the need to secure a $20M gift or several 7-figure gifts to reach the $90M goal. With a current participation rate of 71%, Council members who have not given to the Annual Fund were encouraged to do so, as annual fund gifts are critical to Terry as they help close the gap each year as state fund continues to decrease. All Board members were also strongly encouraged to make their pledge prior to the public phase of the Campaign in April. As the Campaign becomes public, the National Campaign Cabinet will reach out to several cities across the country; efforts will be led by two co-chairs in each city. Horne reviewed the tentative schedule of events for April 26, 2013, in Athens, announcing a joint meeting with TDAC, Campaign Cabinet and National Campaign meeting and the groundbreaking ceremony. Timing details are still being finalized. The Terry Alumni Awards and Gala will take place in Atlanta on April 27; all Council members are encouraged to attend.

Buisiness Learning Community Update

Brad Hunt, Executive Director of the Terry Office of Information Technology, provided an update on the Business Learning Community. Rule Joy Trammell Rubio and Stern were selected as the architects, and Hardin Construction as the Construction Manager. Hunt will chair the BLC Design and Construction Committee. Hunt went over the projected cost estimate of the project and displayed a graph (see presentation, slide 27) comparing Terry’s plans with peer schools. The project will be executed in 3 phases with a target completion date of July 2015 for phase I. Council members discussed the importance of finding an attribute of the BLC that makes it stand out as the best in class. It was also suggested that students’ input should be considered (possible involvement of students into the design as a class project.) Sumichrast also encouraged members who wish to get involved with the BLC Committee to let him know. Architectural drawings will be available by May 2013.

Alumni Board Update

Buck Wiley named the recipients of the Alumni Awards which will be honored at the Gala on April 27, 2013, in Atlanta. The corporate sponsorship goal for the event has already been exceeded. Wiley highlighted the success of other Alumni Board initiatives, including Terry Regional Alumni Network activities, Terry Third Thursday, the Women’s Conference, the MBA committee and the Development Committee. Wiley stated that the AB is in the process of voting on a change to the bylaws to make participation, at Dean’s Circle level, to the Annual Fund/Campaign Support a requirement.

Young Alumni Board Update

The Young Alumni Board has a “SEC” (Sustain — Engage and Collaborate) approach. Ty Dickey explained that the Board is maintaining its involvement at undergraduate level, via participation in alumni panels, new student welcome and mentoring program. Events are scheduled within the state and other networks. The YAB also aims at engaging current and former members (at events and with the help of its online directory). YAB members are collaborating with various committees and other boards. Dickey reminded Council members that the deadline for YAB nominations is May 1. (Send nominations to Blake Bruce)
