  • Panel One: Business and Law Careers
  • Panel Two: Architecture, Design and Real estate Careers

In 1987, the United Nations defined sustainability in the context of development as being able to meet "the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." While this is the most widely quoted definition of the term, the concept of sustainability can take many forms—and for students interested in working in the field, many career paths. What sustainability is, what sustainable goals should be, and how these goals are to be achieved by 21st Century businesses are all open to interpretation.

Universities around the country have responded to this increased interest in the environment and growth in the "green collar" job sector by incorporating sustainability into existing programs or creating new areas of concentration and specialty. The University of Georgia is no different. UGA’s Office of Sustainability was initiated less than one year ago in response to campus-wide recommendations and student-led initiatives calling for enhanced coordination, communication, and advancement of sustainability initiatives on campus. In order to provide direction to students looking to pursue a career in sustainability, the University of Georgia Terry College of Business will be hosting a conference intended to bring together practitioners, academics, and professionals from the fields of business, law, architecture, and design whose roles focus primarily on sustainability in order to discuss experiences and career paths.

The conference will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011. It will be composed of two panels and a morning and afternoon keynote address. The first panel will be comprised of professionals working in business and law. The second panel will include professionals working in commercial real estate, architecture, engineering, and consulting. Kevin Kirsche, Director of the University of Georgia Office of Sustainability, will deliver the morning address. The afternoon keynote address will be delivered during lunch by Mandy Mahoney, Director of Management & Strategy at the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance. Upon its conclusion, the conference should increase student awareness and interest in the field.
