Information and Nomination
About the Awards
Terry’s Outstanding Staff Awards are given on a semi-annual basis in two categories:
- Terry Achievement Awards: to recognize Terry staff for outstanding performance in carrying out their assigned responsibiliites
- Terry Community Building Awards: to recognize Terry staff for outstanding performance in building the Terry College Community
Recipients are selected by a committee appointed by the dean, which chooses from among nominations submitted. Full-time and part-time (1/2 time or greater and benefits eligible) staff members are eligible for these awards after completing at least two full years of service in the Terry College. The Staff Awards, begun in 2002, have awarded recipients with with an engraved glass award and a check in recognition of their contributions.
These awards are a result of Terry College's Strategic Plan which list the four core values as:
- We value helping members of the Terry College community achieve their full potential over the course of their careers. It is important to provide individuals with the opportunities and resources to develop and apply their skills and knowledge.
- We value creativity, enterprise, and continuous improvement in our learning environment. Imaginative insight, entrepreneurial spirit and energy, and individual efforts are encouraged and rewarded. We want faculty, staff, and students to be aggressive and unrelenting in finding new and better ways to perform.
- We value collegiality and expect professional courtesy and dignity among individuals. Diversity among ideas and people is respected and desired.
- We value ethical behavior. High levels of honesty and integrity will provide a foundation for trust, openness, and mutual respect in interpersonal relations and communication.
Terry Achievement Award
This award recognizes Terry staff members for outstanding performance in carrying out their assigned responsibilities. Evidence to support the nomination may take many forms. Some examples include a specific task or project completed extraordinarily well; innovations that significantly enhance the work environment, increase productivity, or result in cost savings; or sustained performance of the highest caliber over an extended period of time.
Terry Community Building Award
This award recognizes Terry staff for outstanding performance in building the Terry College community. Evidence to support the nomination may take many forms. Some examples include exhibiting an especially cooperative, inter-departmental team spirit; empowering other staff to develop their skills and knowledge; maintaining a strong, positive attitude over a sustained period of time; or effectively participating in staff governance.
Nominations
Awards are made in two categories. Winners are chosen from nominees submitted to a five-person awards selection committee, which is appointed annually by the dean. A majority of the awards selection committee members are Terry College staff.
Each award recipient receives an engraved glass award, recognition in Terry FYI Insider newsletter and at a college-wide reception, a $750 cash award added to his or her regular paycheck.
You must be a member of the Terry Faculty or Staff to access the nomination forms.
Eligibility
Full-time and part-time staff (1/2 time or greater and benefits eligible) are eligible for these awards after completing at least two full years of service in the Terry College. Custodial staff and outside consultants are not eligible for Terry's Outstanding Staff awards. An individual who wins an award is not eligible to win that same award again during the same calendar year. However, an individual may win both an Achievement Award and a Community Building Award during the same calendar year. No one serving on the awards selection committee is eligible to receive an award during the calendar year of his or her appointment. (An individual who finds it necessary to resign from service on the awards selection committee is not eligible for an award until the following calendar year.)
Process
Any faculty or staff member in the Terry College may nominate another staff member for one of the awards. Nominations are retained in the nomination pool for 12 months following initial submission. Thus, it is not necessary to submit multiple nominations for the same person for the same award, unless 12 months have passed since the initial nomination. Preference is for the nominator to use the online form available through the Terry Intranet (left side of page menu options). A signed one-page letter is acceptable as well. Use either the form or letter to detail who is being nominated, whether the nomination is for the Achievement Award or the Community Building Award, and why the nominee is deserving of recognition (including specific examples). Nominations should be submitted to Don Perry, Senior Director for Finance & Administration, 367 Brooks Hall. (Online forms are routed automatically.)
