Real Estate Major
The undergraduate real estate program provides the student with an analytical foundation and a firm understanding of the areas of real estate finance, investment, and valuation. The major in real estate is directed toward students planning for a career in real estate brokerage, leasing, mortgage lending, investments, management, appraising, or development. Any REAL course not counted elsewhere, including REAL 4800 (Real Estate Internship). Undergraduate Course Descriptions
Introduction to the basic principles of real estate law, markets, valuation, and finance. Designed for non-real estate majors, as
well as a basis for more advanced courses. Practical and applied experience in real estate. Student must be sponsored by a business or government agency.
Prerequisite: REAL 4000 and permission of department.
Non-Traditional Format: Internship. Group study of selected topics from the field of real estate such as real estate market analysis, technology in real estate, and real estate economics. The study of the real estate development process and current issues affecting development decisions. Particular emphasis
is given to the public sector's role in the development process and to real estate market analysis techniques that are used
to evaluate development ideas. Valuation of real property rights. Provides an in-depth look at conventional valuation techniques in addition to modern
valuation methods based on statistical inference and industry-based computer software. A broad understanding of the role
of real estate valuation within the real estate field. Asset management decisions of individuals and corporations engaged in the real estate decision making process. Topics in
real estate asset management include site selection, acquisition (lease or purchase), development, financing,
management, and disposition. This is an intensive case study course intended for real estate majors. The instruments, techniques, and institutions of real estate finance; sources of funds; mortgage risk analysis; emphasis on
typical policies and procedures used in financing of residential, industrial, and commercial properties. How law impacts real estate, its ownership, conveyance, and development. Real property ownership interests, restrictions on such interest, methods of transferring such interest, private and public land-use controls, and legal transactions involving real estate, such as gifts, sales, and leases.
