James H. Shepherd, Jr., is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shepherd Center, the country’s largest catastrophic care hospital, specializing in the treatment of people with spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and other neurological disorders, and urological problems.

Currently, James divides his time between Shepherd Center and other family businesses. He is Chairman/CEO and Treasurer of Plant Improvement Company and Vice President of Shepherd Construction Company, Inc. He remains actively involved on a national scale, advocating for people with disabilities.

A native of Atlanta, Shepherd graduated from the Westminster Schools and then University of Georgia, with a BBA degree in 1973. It was his near-fatal bodysurfing accident, which led to the founding of Shepherd Center two years later.

James has served as a Director of the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation. He has served on the Board of Directors of Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for Rehabilitation Technology, and the Governor’s Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Trust Fund Authority. James has also serves on the Steering Committee for the First Presbyterian Church, which led the Interfaith Conference on Disability Awareness. He was a Board Member of Initiative 2000, a celebration of the 10th anniversary of ADA and a member of the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee. He volunteered on the accessibility advisory committees of MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rail & Transit Authority), the City of Atlanta Airport, the World Congress Center and the Georgia Dome.
