New Student Orientation
To-Do List for New Students
The University of Georgia and the Terry College have several “to-do” items that require prompt action from the student. Failure to complete these items in a timely manner can result in major impediments to program progression such as delays in compensation or loss of assistantships.
The university’s “to-do list” is divided into two categories: Pre-Arrival Checklist and Post-Arrival Checklist. All steps may or may not apply to your individual situation. If you have questions, contact the appropriate office, your home academic department, or Graduate Admissions. Please carefully review the information on the university’s to-do list.
In addition to the university’s to-do list, you will need to:
-
Attend Teaching Assistants Orientation (mandatory)
All new graduate teaching and laboratory assistants who will have instructional responsibilities during 2011-2012 are required to attend orientation for graduate teaching and laboratory assistants, which will be held in room 101 of the Miller Learning Center on Thursday, August 11, 2011, 8:45 am to 12:30 pm. The orientation provides new GTAs and GLAs with information for teaching undergraduates and introduces instructional support systems available at the University.
-
Obtain a UGACard
The UGACard is the official University of Georgia identification card. It is required for students to take advantage of many campus services, such as entry into dining halls and participation in intramural sports.
The cost of a new or replacement UGACard is $15. Students must apply for their UGACard at the information desk on the third floor of the Tate Student Center. To obtain their ID, students must first register for classes and settle any outstanding fees on their student account. Be prepared to present a picture ID (i.e. passport, birth certificate or driver’s license) when applying for a UGACard.
-
Establish a UGA MyID
All students accepted to the University of Georgia must establish a UGA MyID and password to access services at the university. Creating a UGA MyID automatically enables students with their own UGA email account. This email account will be the address to which official university email communications will be sent.
Terry OIT offers an email alias for all graduate students. A student can format their email address to be @terry.uga.edu rather than @uga.edu.
To create a UGA MyID, new students should submit a request form from MyID at UGA. Follow the on-screen instructions and after submitting the request form, carefully review the confirmation information.
-
Establish a Local Address
Each student must put their local address on file with the registrar. Address changes can be made on OASIS. It is very important that local addresses are kept current so that progress reports from the university are delivered in a timely manner to the proper recipient.
It is also important for students to establish their local address with the Terry Graduate Program. Upon acquiring a local mailing address, phone service, and university email account, students are expected to email this information both to the director of the PhD Program and to the graduate coordinator of their specific area of study.
-
Review Assistantship Responsibilities
Finally, if you are receiving an assistantship, you will find more relevant to do items under Assistantship Responsibilities. Careful attention to these items is expected and appreciated.
