Miller Learning Center
The Miller Learning Center is the latest jewel in the UGA crown, joining the Performing and Visual Arts Complex, the Ramsey Student Physical Activity Center, and the Life Sciences Complex in providing new learning space on campus. The SLC is the favorite study and group meeting space of PhDs. Its 258,000 square feet includes classrooms, group study rooms, wireless workstations, a reading room, quiet study space, project and presentation rooms, learning labs, event space, and a coffee and snack bar.
Outdoor Activities
The Oconee Forest, part of UGA’s Recreational Sports Complex, extends along the west side of campus. The park offers playing fields, tennis courts, hiking trails and running courses, a ropes course, and softball fields. Lake Herrick is the centerpiece of the park and is bordered by a pavilion and white-sand beach where students barbecue, canoe, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Ramsey Center
Many PhDs take advantage of the Ramsey Student Physical Activity Center, a 430,000 sq. ft. facility that houses three swimming pools, three multi-purpose rooms, five gymnasia, a climbing wall, 10 racquetball courts, and a 1/8-mile track. The 10,000 sq.ft., strength and conditioning room provides over 200 workout stations, including strength-training and cardio-vascular machines. A variety of classes such as step aerobics, kickboxing, tae-kwon-do, and swing dancing are also offered.
Intramural Sports
In addition to excellence in academics, the university offers students interested in sports a variety of activities in which to participate. The university has a newly renovated 18-hole championship golf course available to students at a reduced fee. The intramural sports program includes football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, golf, cross-country, track, badminton, swimming, bowling, tennis, inner-tube water polo, putt-putt, and canoe racing. The Georgia Outdoor Recreation Program participates in activities such as backpacking, caving, horseback riding, cycling, and snow skiing.
Student Health Services
The University Health Center, accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, offers inpatient and outpatient care to registered students who have paid the student health fee. Health insurance is available to students and their dependents through the Health Center office.
The Mental Health and Physical Health Divisions of the University Health Center enable the university to meet the varied needs of college students. The Health Center also provides a preventive and emergency dental clinic which operates on a subscription basis. The Health Center is open 24 hours daily during regular academic sessions of the university, with a fee-for-service schedule in effect during breaks.
Transportation
The campus bus system provides a free campus shuttle bus service and chartered bus service for students, faculty and staff. The service is funded by a transportation fee paid by all students and by funds received from traffic fines.
The Athens Transit System is a department of the Athens-Clarke County government. The government and the University of Georgia have an arrangement that allows University students to ride any of the regularly scheduled ATS buses free of charge upon presentation of a UGA ID card. ATS buses run through campus and stop at all campus bus stops.
From sports to symphonies, Terry PhDs enjoy all the benefits of being a part of the University of Georgia. World-class facilities, performing arts, and nationally ranked sports teams provide year-round entertainment. No matter the season, there is always plenty to keep students busy when taking a break from studying.
