Online Orientation: Requirements

Important Information for International Students
Prior to registering, you must go to International Student Services (Room 201 Barrow Hall). You will need to take your visa with you and also be prepared to show proof of health insurance or be prepared to purchase health insurance. International students are required in most cases to purchase the international student health insurance through the Office of International Education (OIE); so before purchasing insurance, international students should contact OIE at 706.542.7903

It is not mandatory that you apply for a social security card prior to registration, but it is very important that you apply for a social security card as soon as possible. International students on an assistantship must have a Social Security number. Application can be made at the Social Security Administration office located at 355 E. Hancock Avenue (Federal Building) in downtown Athens. Once you have received your card (usually takes 2-3 weeks for you to receive), you need to take your card to the registrar's office (Academic Building) and if you are on an assistantship, you will need to bring the card to a department secretary to make a copy of it for payroll purposes. Once you have taken care of this with the registrar's office, you then need to begin using your new social security number instead of the student I.D. that was assigned to you through the Graduate School Admissions office.
